Music and Family

I interviewed my mother for this interview.

She did not wish to be recorded

She liked classic rap music most of her life, and is the reason that I like this genre of music. When she was younger she liked The Grateful Dead, a folksy blues like band that was famous for having a cult-like following.  She used to go to a lot of their concerts and told me all about the culture.

The band was famous for its fans , most of whom went concert to concert, following the band and having 2-3 day parties, much like the Woodstock concert.  The fans were rumored to be acid taking, drug doing fans, but that was not the case for all.  Some just loved the camaraderie and friendly atmosphere of the shows.

She noted that this was the music that she chose, but most were listening to rock and roll back then.  Popular bands were Styx, R.E.O Speedwagon, and Ozzy Osborne

Getting back to the genre that my mother listened to when I was growing up, I have to mention Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, and Eminem.  Although the first two had already passed when my mom was quite young, we still listened to them.  Here is picture of them.

My mom was a little kid when the East Coast West coast rap battles were going on, and unfortunately for the world of rap music, both of these artists were killed in that war.  Here is a video of Notorious B.I.G’s famous song Juicy

Eminem is a rapper who rose to fame during my lifetime, and was also one of my mom’s favorites when we were young.  He is considered one of the greatest of all times.

My mom also shared that she now listens to many different genres .

By conducting this interview, I was able to see the tie between how family affects their children’s musical choices.

  1. Hey Cameron! I really liked your blog! Our moms have pretty similar music taste in regards to Tupac and The Notorious BIG. I liked how you went into a bit of a background behind who the artists are that your mom mentioned, especially for artists like The Grateful Dead, that I did not know much about.
