Gender has always been a part of music and the differences between male and female performers' popularity has been noticeable but in the rap genre, it is a huge difference . There are many more successful male than female rappers. There are, however, a few very prominent female rappers who stood out among the rest. While some women make it big, the genre, which is my favorite , is dominated by men. Around the time of Nicki's success, some amazing artists , some of whom Nicki ended up doing songs with, topped the charts. One of these famous rappers who rivaled Ms. Minaj was Drake, a very popular entertainer . He was very well listened to, and had a great voice. Yet another famous male rapper topping the chart during the explosion of popular rappers was Da Baby. This , however, was a later time than the previous two male rappers. He was extremely popular, and had many top hits. ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed hearing the aspects of music you found for music in gender. This approach was different from the other ones I read, so I learned different aspects from this. You had some good points on the different break throughs of men and women. This was definitely to the point, you did well!

ReplyDeleteHi Cameron! I love the direction you went in for this! I agree that women are often undervalued in music and rap is the best example of that gender discrepancy. While I don't listen to Nicki regularly I think her career is fascinating and I love her as female representation that is so widely loved in a male-dominated genre.
